Shoes
Besides training shoes, you will need to have spikes for competition
1/4" pyramid spikes ONLY (Needle & Christmas Tree spikes are illegal)
Sprinter spikes have a hard plastic plate on the sole of the shoe
Distance spikes have a softer/more flexible sole
Training shoes should be replaced at the beginning of each season
Worn out shoes = injuries
New shoes are considerably less expensive than doctor co-pays, PT appointments, X-rays, MRIs, and missing the part/all of the season because of preventable injuries
Distance runners should consider having 2 pairs of training shoes and rotating their use each practice
You shouldn't have to "break in" running shoes; they should be comfortable right out of the box
Winter Running Attire
Always have more clothing/layers than you think you might need (you can always shed what you don't need if you get too warm)
Sprinters tend to need more layers to keep their muscles warm and keep from getting injured in cold weather
Distance runners tend to start with layers and shed them as their workout goes on- this is NORMAL.
Base layers:
Tights
Drifit long sleeve shirts
Warm up gear:
Sweatpants
Hoodies
Running jackets
Protecting your extremities:
Beanie hats
Lightweight running gloves
Gear
(It gets dark early- if you are training in the late afternoon, make sure you can see and be seen!)
Headlamp
Reflective running vest
